Balika kand muzaffarpur bihar

The Muzaffarpur Balika Grih case (also called the Muzaffarpur shelter home case) was one of India's most serious child protection scandals.

What happened?

  • In 2018, a social audit by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) reported widespread abuse at a government-funded girls' shelter home (Balika Grih) in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

  • Medical examinations later confirmed that 34 of the 42 girls living in the shelter had been sexually abused.

  • The shelter was operated by the NGO Sewa Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti, headed by Brajesh Thakur.

  • The case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the supervision of the Supreme Court because of its seriousness.
