A full report card usually has several subjects, each with its own marks obtained and its own maximum marks โ and the overall percentage is not simply the average of each subject's individual percentage. It has to be calculated from the true combined totals.

Why you can't just average the percentages
Averaging individual subject percentages gives the wrong answer whenever the subjects have different maximum marks โ in the example above, simply averaging the five percentages gives a slightly different (and less accurate) result than combining the raw totals first, because Hindi's smaller 50-mark total should carry proportionally less weight.
"Best of" rules
Some boards only count your best 4 or 5 subjects toward the final percentage, dropping the lowest-scoring one. If your board uses a best-of rule, only add the subjects that actually count toward the official total.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just average my subject percentages instead?
Only if every subject has exactly the same maximum marks. If the totals differ (e.g. one subject is out of 50 and another out of 100), you must combine the raw totals first for an accurate result.
How do I handle a "best of 5 subjects" rule?
Only enter the subjects that count toward your official aggregate โ leave out any subject your board excludes, such as an additional elective that does not count toward the final percentage.
Does this work for any number of subjects?
