GPA to Percentage Calculator

Convert a 4.0-scale GPA to a percentage.

Percentage

90%

A common linear estimate โ€” some universities use their own scale.

GPA (Grade Point Average) on a 4.0 scale is the standard grading system used by US universities and many international institutions โ€” it is a completely different scale to the 10-point CGPA/SGPA system used by CBSE and most Indian universities, so it needs its own separate conversion.

This is commonly needed by students applying abroad, or converting a foreign transcript back into a percentage for an Indian application.

Percentage = (GPA รท 4) ร— 100

This is a simplified linear conversion โ€” many US universities publish their own specific GPA-to-percentage table, which can differ from this straight-line formula.

Worked example

Question: Convert a GPA of 3.6 (out of 4.0) to a percentage.
Step 1 โ€” Divide by 4: 3.6 รท 4 = 0.9
Step 2 โ€” Multiply by 100: 0.9 ร— 100 = 90
Answer: A 3.6 GPA is approximately 90%.

Unlike the CGPA-to-percentage formula, there is no single universally agreed conversion between GPA and percentage โ€” different universities grade on different curves, so a 3.6 GPA at one institution might represent a different percentage than a 3.6 GPA at another. This tool gives a reasonable, commonly used linear estimate.

If your grading system is actually a 10-point CGPA rather than a 4.0 GPA, use the CGPA to Percentage Calculator instead โ€” the two systems are not interchangeable, and applying the wrong formula gives a badly incorrect result.

How do I convert GPA to percentage?

Divide your GPA by 4 (the maximum on the standard US scale), then multiply by 100. A 3.2 GPA is (3.2 รท 4) ร— 100 = 80%.

Is this an official conversion?

No โ€” there is no single official worldwide GPA-to-percentage formula. This uses a common linear approximation; some universities publish their own specific conversion scale.

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA typically refers to a 4.0-point scale used in the US and internationally. CGPA usually refers to a 10-point scale used by CBSE and most Indian universities โ€” they require different conversion formulas.
